Mandrare River Camp

Discover the wild heart of southern Madagascar at Mandrare River Camp — where rare wildlife, ancient forests and Antandroy culture come together in one of the island’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Remote. Rare. Remarkable.

Set beneath ancient tamarind trees along the banks of the Mandrare River, Mandrare River Camp offers an intimate gateway into one of Madagascar’s most remarkable and off the beaten track regions. Here, within the vast spiny forest ecosystem of southern Madagascar, fragile habitats, unique wildlife and the traditions of the Antandroy people remain deeply intertwined.

Located within a significant community-managed conservation landscape, the camp works in close partnership with local villages to help protect more than 22,000 hectares of spiny and gallery forest, while supporting education, conservation initiatives and sustainable livelihoods for surrounding communities.

A stay at Mandrare River Camp offers an immersive journey into this extraordinary wilderness. Guided by expert local trackers, guests can explore sacred forests and baobab landscapes, encounter several species of lemurs, birds and reptiles, drift along the Mandrare River by boat, and discover the fascinating traditions and daily life of the Antandroy culture.

Thoughtfully designed to blend with its surroundings, the camp combines comfort, warm Malagasy hospitality and a deep sense of place, creating a unique safari experience that showcases the wild beauty and cultural richness of southern Madagascar.

Seasons of operations

Mandrare River Camp operates seasonally in line with natural cycles, ensuring the best possible wildlife viewing, river access, and guest experience throughout the year. Each season offers its own character, from lush green landscapes and flowing rivers to dry months with exceptional wildlife visibility and cultural activity.

Closing Date: 10 January till 24 March

Seasons of operations in April

Lush and green after the rains, April offers warm late-summer days, excellent birding, and active reptiles. The river remains high, allowing scenic boat crossings and gentle river journeys to the sacred gallery forest — a high-season experience at excellent value.

Seasons of operations in May

Slightly cooler evenings with warm days make May an ideal month. The landscape remains green, wildlife is active, and the autumn light creates spectacular conditions for photography, particularly as the sun sets behind the baobabs.

Seasons of operations in June

Early winter brings mild daytime temperatures and cooler nights. Late June coincides with Madagascar’s Independence Day celebrations, offering a rare opportunity to experience vibrant village parades, music, and cultural festivities.

Seasons of operations in July & August

The driest months of the year, with clear skies and rewarding wildlife viewing as vegetation thins. Lemurs remain easily seen, birding is excellent, and cultural life is vibrant, with ceremonies and celebrations centred along the river.

Seasons of operations in September

As water sources dry, wildlife congregates near the river, making lemur sightings especially rewarding. Mating season begins, and the first baby lemurs appear, adding a special dimension to wildlife encounters.

Seasons of operations in October

Peak season for birding and wildlife. Warmer days bring heightened activity across species, while cooler conditions remain ideal for walking. The possible return of the river is celebrated locally, marking the anticipation of the coming rains.

Seasons of operations in November

Continued peak wildlife and birding with the arrival of early rains, typically brief afternoon thunderstorms. Early sunrises allow for extended morning activities and exceptional viewing opportunities.

Seasons of operations in December & January

The river flows strongly again, creating wonderful opportunities for boat excursions. Wildlife remains abundant, and festive celebrations around Christmas and New Year offer a rich cultural atmosphere.
