Manafiafy Forest Lodge offers a diverse range of land and sea experiences designed to reveal the extraordinary ecosystems and culture of Madagascar’s south-east coast.
The protected coastal forests surrounding the lodge are home to remarkable endemic species. Guided walks lead guests through lush littoral rainforest where red-collared lemurs leap through the canopy and colourful birds such as couas, vangas and parrots fill the air with their calls. Evening forest walks reveal Madagascar’s nocturnal world, with mouse lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos and chameleons often spotted by torchlight.
A boat journey through the nearby mangrove estuaries offers spectacular scenery and exceptional birdwatching opportunities. These rich wetlands host species such as Madagascar malachite kingfishers, crested ibis and green pigeons, with the Anosy Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop.
The calm waters of the bay are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. Guests can explore hidden coves, paddle through mangrove channels, or snorkel among colourful marine life around nearby islands and coral outcrops. Quiet beaches and remote islands provide ideal locations for private picnics or sunset moments by the sea.
Between June and October, humpback whales migrate along Madagascar’s coastline to breed and give birth in warmer waters. Manafiafy is one of the first places on the island where these magnificent giants arrive each year, offering unforgettable whale-watching opportunities both from boats and from shore.
Guests can also explore the nearby fishing village of Manafiafy and connect with the local Antanosy community. Visits may include the SEED Madagascar “Stitch” project, where local women produce beautiful embroidered crafts while developing valuable skills and sustainable livelihoods.
