Hidden in the wild landscapes of southern Madagascar, Mandrare River Camp lies at the gateway to one of the island’s most extraordinary ecosystems.
Nestled beneath ancient tamarind trees on the banks of the Mandrare River, the camp sits in the remote Mandrare Valley in southeastern Madagascar, a region known for its dramatic scenery, remarkable wildlife and rich Antandroy culture. Here, the life-giving river winds through the rare spiny forest ecosystem, sustaining both the surrounding forests and the nearby community of Ifotaka.
This unique landscape is home to an incredible variety of endemic wildlife, including several species of lemurs, reptiles and birdlife found nowhere else on Earth. From the sacred gallery forests along the river to the striking desert-like spiny forests beyond, the area offers one of Madagascar’s most fascinating and biodiverse environments.
Mandrare River Camp provides the perfect base from which to explore this remote corner of the island — where nature, conservation and the traditions of the Antandroy people remain deeply connected.
Reaching Mandrare River Camp is part of the adventure and offers travellers a journey into one of Madagascar’s most remote and rewarding destinations.
Scheduled Charter Flights
The easiest and most comfortable way to reach the camp is via the Madagascar Classic Collection scheduled charter flights, which operate twice weekly between Antananarivo and Mandrare. These direct flights land at Ifotaka Airstrip, located just five minutes from the camp, allowing guests to arrive quickly and begin their experience in the Mandrare Valley.
The scheduled charter flights operate every Monday and Friday between late May and early November, returning to Antananarivo by early afternoon in time for convenient international flight connections.
Commercial Flights & Road Transfer
Mandrare River Camp can also be reached via a scheduled flight on Air Madagascar from Antananarivo to Fort Dauphin, followed by a scenic 3.5-hour private road transfer through the landscapes of southern Madagascar.
However, for the most seamless and memorable journey, we recommend travelling by scheduled charter flight directly to Ifotaka, offering spectacular aerial views of Madagascar’s southern wilderness before landing just moments from camp.
