Explore the wild landscapes and vibrant culture of southern Madagascar.
Set beneath ancient tamarind trees along the banks of the Mandrare River, Mandrare River Camp offers immersive experiences in one of Madagascar’s most unique and remote ecosystems. From encounters with lemurs in the spiny forest to cultural visits with the Antandroy people, every activity reveals the remarkable biodiversity and traditions of Madagascar’s wild south.
All activities are guided by our expert local team and can be tailored to each guest’s interests and pace.
The spiny forest ecosystem of southern Madagascar is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Guided walks through the Ifotaka Community Forest and Sacred Gallery Forest reveal extraordinary plants, ancient baobabs and fascinating wildlife.
Guests may encounter ring-tailed lemurs, Verreaux’s sifakas, sportive lemurs and mouse lemurs, as well as reptiles, birds and the remarkable flora that defines this rare desert forest habitat.
As night falls, the forest transforms. Torchlit night walks reveal Madagascar’s nocturnal wildlife, including chameleons, geckos and small lemur species.
The Mandrare Valley is also home to the proud Antandroy people, whose traditions and beliefs are deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.
Guided village walks in Ifotaka provide insight into daily life, traditional homes and ancestral tombs. Guests may also visit the vibrant local markets, where villagers gather to trade goods and produce.
Madagascar Classic Collection also supports a community school, funded in part by guest stays. Visiting the school offers a meaningful glimpse into the positive impact of responsible tourism in the region.
The landscapes surrounding Mandrare River Camp are both dramatic and diverse. A full-day excursion to Lac Anony reveals sweeping coastal scenery where saltwater lakes, sand dunes and the Indian Ocean meet.
The lake attracts greater flamingos and other waterbirds, while the surrounding dunes offer spectacular views across this remote coastline.
Evenings at Mandrare River Camp are as memorable as the daytime adventures.
Guests can enjoy a sundowner beneath towering baobab trees, watching the sky turn golden as the sun sets across the landscape. As night falls, local villagers sometimes perform traditional Antandroy dances around a bonfire, creating a magical cultural experience beneath the stars.
Alternatively, relax beside the Mandrare River at camp with drinks and snacks as the day fades into the clear southern night sky.
